the numbers in red are called “descriptive” numbers and date back to 1770. These red numbers seem placed haphazardly as the numbers don’t proceed sequentially from house to house. This is because when the soldiers were designating house numbers, they allocated the next number in the sequence to the newest house built. They did not base the numbers on the following geographic location. So even if your house was located a ways away from the previous house on the street, you’d receive the next number in the sequence.
